Eswatini – Communities

GLM Eswatini currently works with four communities in Eswatini.

Dlangeni

Dlangeni is located in the Hhohho region, 30km northeast of the capital Mbabane. The village consists of eleven sub-communities and has a population of approximately 10,000 people. It is predominantly a farming community that has practised conventional agriculture. The main livelihoods are livestock and grain crop production. GLM Eswatini initiated a working partnership with Dlangeni in June 2011. A backyard organic gardening project has since been started in Ngweni sub-community, where women are also involved in making handicrafts, such as weaving mats, decorations and handmade bags.

Mnyamatsini

Mnyamatsini is located in the Hhohho region, southeast from the capital Mbabane. The community has around 10,000 inhabitants according to the local leader’s estimate. The area’s livelihoods vary from one household to another: some rely on selling their own gardening produce or renting houses or rooms, while others commute to work in the city. GLM Eswatini initiated a working partnership with Mnyamatsini in 2013. In Mnyamatsini GLM has constructed two dry toilets and a drop-off recycling centre, and conducted trainings on e.g. waste management, dry sanitation, organic gardening, grey water management, and composting.

Msunduza

Msunduza is situated on the eastern edge of the capital Mbabane in the Hhohho region and has about 16,000 inhabitants. The community consists of formal and informal residential areas with limited social services and infrastructure. Unemployment is high, particularly among the youth. Since February 2013, GLM Eswatini has been conducting skills development workshops in Msunduza on a range of issues, including leadership skills, fundraising, conflict management and NGO management.

Ngonini

Ngonini is situated in the Hhohho region in North Western Eswatini with a population of approximately 50Â 000 people. It is part of rural Eswatini National Land. GLM Eswatini has been working in Ngonini community from the beginning of the year 2015. This is done in partnership with Vusumnotfo, an NGO that has worked in the area with the vision that the communities are able and driven to improve their own social, economic, and environmental conditions. In Ngonini GLM will hold trainings on e.g. dry sanitation, waste collection, and it will build dry toilets together with the Vusumnotfo.
