Creating Income and Improving Livelihoods Through Irrigation in Luangwa District

Farmers in Chiende Ende, Phwazi Ward, Luangwa District, are beginning to experience the economic benefits of irrigated agriculture through the Climate Just Communities II (CJC II) Project, funded by the Scottish Government.
Through the irrigation scheme, farmers are producing fresh vegetables, including onions, for household consumption and sale. The initiative is helping participating farmers improve food security while creating opportunities to earn income from their agricultural production.
Recently, the farmers earned K213 from the sale of fresh onions to Lusaka Provincial Water and Sanitation officers, who were impressed by the quality of produce coming from the irrigation scheme. Although the sale was modest, it demonstrates how access to irrigation is enabling farmers to turn agricultural production into an income-generating activity.
Reliable access to water for irrigation allows farmers to continue producing crops beyond the traditional rain-fed farming season, strengthening their ability to respond to changing climatic conditions and increasing opportunities to supply local markets.
Through the Climate Just Communities II Project, Green Living Movement continues to work with communities in Luangwa District to promote climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable livelihoods and improved household incomes.
The experience of farmers in Chiende Ende demonstrates how community-based irrigation can contribute to building more resilient livelihoods while creating practical economic opportunities for rural households.
